This set of enlightenment classics, hailed as “the first Chinese lesson of a century”, has influence on literary giants like Hu Shi and Mao Dun. Containing 3,291 Chinese characters and 709 illustrations, it elucidates the natural world while blending knowledge with aesthetic appeal. In this faithful facsimile edition, the illustrations have been carefully restored, textual errors corrected, and a detailed commentary added for modern readers. 书籍虽以传统的装订方式为根基，如：书匣的开启方式源于中国传统古籍善本的形式，每一册书籍以传统筒子页的形式装订。但在设计的表现方式上通过纸张色彩和文字拼叠的形式呈现，用现代设计的语言再现了全新的视觉体验，更符合当代人的审美趣味。设计灵感源于原文中纵横交错的网格系统。位于书匣的底部还附有一本汉字精讲导读《字说》，包装的结构巧妙，整体性强。
The design of the book is based on the traditional Chinese binding, such as the opening structure of the book case recalls the form of classical Chinese thread-binding, and volumes are bound in traditional cylinder-style. On the contrast, the visual design is presented through layered papers and interwoven typography, creating a new visual experience via the language of modern design, which is appealing to modern aesthetics. The design is inspired from the book’s intersecting grid patterns. At the bottom of the book case rests a compact companion volume titled Words Explained , complementing the packaging’s ingenious structure and cohesive integrity.
