In 2020, as the pandemic swept across the globe, beloved family members and close friends were separated by distances, unable to meet in person. Everyone experienced and witnessed more scenes of separation, some recoverable, others final. Just as poets have been inspired by separation to create countless masterpieces, the designer seemed to have gained new insights and applied them in the book Farewell created in collaboration with the movable type printing institute ZiZai. How many types of farewells do we encounter in life? Author Peng Cheng poses this question emphatically in the book, addressing it to himself or perhaps to the universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a small, square book entirely in white: a white slipcase, a white cover, and white interior pages. The color of farewells is white. In the moment of parting, we feel the world goes silent and becomes a void, like a flashback in a film where scenes rapidly cut to white, or the blinding white light as memories fade, before starting anew from that blankness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, as the concept of farewell is complex, white is not a monolithic hue. As the atmosphere of farewell deepens, emotions become so nuanced that they vary from second to second. Therefore, the \u201cwhite\u201d in this book is also layered, corresponding to different textures of white. The tactile experience transitions from the hardcover to the soft inner pages, allowing each reader to fully engage with their own emotions through the words of Farewell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The white outer slipcase represents the emotional armor each individual shows to the world. It seems sturdy yet is easily dissolved by water. Inside, the text is printed onto crumpled paper using movable type printing, pressing the ink deeply into the paper, as if it had been repeatedly picked up, read, and tightly clenched like a letter.
