This is a monograph on the future of Chinese furniture design. The author, Hong Wei, has been studying Chinese traditional furniture for many years. His furniture design respects the traditions and looks to the future. In addition, he focuses on the link between the traditional hand-made wisdom and the contemporary life aesthetics, and explores the dwelling philosophy of Chinese furniture.
“观照”可以说是古与今的观照，也可以说是人与物的观照。书中的家具作品，融入了自然里的一山一水、一草一木……无不相映成趣，处处皆在观照之中。
“Observing and Mirroring” can be interpreted as an observation of the history and the present, or as an observation of humans and objects. In this book, the furniture works are integrated into nature…They match with each other in a harmonious way and all works can be observed and mirrored.
根据家具的不同，本书试图通过区别的纸张建构立体的节奏。泛黄薄纸透出家具的解体，纯净白纸为家具提供想象空间，设计上通过纸张的理性切换，构建起了一个清晰的叙事逻辑。书中三部分的插页打破了阅读的节奏，让读者得到片刻的停顿与思考，引领读者去体会传统老家具的魅力，使传统与现代设计有了融合与呼应，这也是该书整体设计概念的表达。
Depending on the types of furniture, the book attempts to create a layered rhythm, using different types of paper. Yellowed, thin paper reveals the disassembled structure of the furniture, while pure white paper provides a space for imaginative contemplation. The design strategically switches between these paper types, establishing a clear narrative logic. The three sections of inserts within the book disrupt the reading flow, offering moments for pause and reflection. These breaks invite the reader to appreciate the charm of traditional furniture, creating a dialogue between traditional and modern design—an expression of the book’s overall design concept.
